FAQs

What is the difference between floor paint and an epoxy coating?

While the terms are often used interchangeably, they are technically very different. Floor paint is typically a single-component, latex, or oil-based product that sits on top of the concrete. An epoxy coating is a two-component resin system that chemically bonds to the substrate. Coatings are significantly thicker, more durable, and better suited for the rigors of industrial use.

Why does standard floor paint often peel under vehicle tires?

Standard floor paint often fails due to a phenomenon called “hot tire pickup.” As tires cool, they contract and “grab” the thin film of paint, pulling it off the concrete. High Performance Systems uses specialized cross-linking resins that have the tensile strength to resist this, making them far superior for automotive and warehouse environments.

Is floor painting a viable long-term solution for warehouses?

Generally, no. In high-traffic environments like warehouses, standard floor paint will quickly wear away under the friction of forklifts and pallet jacks. A professional contractor will typically recommend a high-build epoxy or urethane system which provides 5 to 10 times the lifespan of paint, ultimately offering a better return on investment.

How does professional preparation differ for floor painting?

Many DIY “painting” projects fail because they skip the prep. Professional contractors like High Performance Systems use diamond grinding or shot-blasting to remove the “laitance” (top weak layer) of the concrete. This creates a porous profile that allows the coating to “root” into the slab, preventing the flaking common with simple paint applications.

Can "epoxy paint" be used in commercial kitchens?

While some products are marketed as “epoxy paint,” they rarely meet the health and safety standards required for commercial kitchens. For these areas, a cementitious urethane or a dedicated resinous coating is required. These systems provide the thermal shock resistance and seamless, non-porous finish necessary to prevent bacterial growth—something a thin layer of paint cannot do.
